Get Involved with Sports First Aid

Filed under: First Aid Classes — fox @ 9:01 am April 27, 2012

Although most people involved with sport will probably know how to treat a bit of cramp, apply a sports ice pack or deal with a stitch; this will more than likely be the limit of their first aid knowledge. This is unfortunate as the physical nature of sport makes participants far more likely to encounter incidents which will require first aid.

Certainly, even a rudimentary knowledge of sports first aid can come in very handy if you are a sporty person. Indeed, the easy-to-learn skills and techniques can be invaluable as they can enable you to not only take care of your own injuries, but also provide effective treatment to other people on your team.

Thankfully, it really is very easy to gain these skills.

Indeed, the training courses we offer here at Safety First Aid Training can provide you everything you need to know about treating sports-related injuries. Our courses are comprehensive and cover severe situations like administering basic life support and helping unconscious casualties to more everyday scenarios like dealing with sprains and applying sports supports.

As well as helping to keep you and your team mates fit and healthy, effective first aid training can potentially help you to save someone’s life – and surely that is reason enough for getting involved.

So, if you want to be able to do more than reach for the instant ice pack every time an injury occurs, get in touch with us here at Safety First Aid Training.

The Difference Between First Aid Classes

Filed under: First Aid Classes — fox @ 10:54 am September 17, 2011

If you’re an employer looking to send your staff on a work first aid course, then you’ll need to distinguish between the different kinds of courses available, according to the experience and previous training your staff already have.

Always look for HSE (Health and Safety Executive) approved courses, as they count towards your legal requirement when it comes to safety in the office. There is no maximum to the number of first aiders you can have in your business, but you should ensure to have a good radio of first aiders to employees throughout the building.

If a member of staff is completely new to first aid training, then they will likely have to go on the standard three day first aid course in order to get a legally recognised first aid qualification, normally valid for three years. If someone has already taken that course some time ago and need a refresher, then there is a two day course – also HSE approved – widely available for them to get the most up to date knowledge. This is always a good idea as sometimes the guidelines can change – for example, with CPR – when more research evolves on the subject.

Finally, there is a 1 day Emergency course for those who want to be able to react in an emergency situation, but who don’t have the time or skill to train to be a full first aider. Whichever course you choose, having more first aiders in the workplace is always a benefit to any business.

The Great Outdoors and First Aid Training

The summer months aren’t just great for tanning on the beach or sneaking into the park for a long office-free lunch. Although we predominantly supply workplace-based First Aid classes, a proportion of our attendance comes via the likes of uniformed organisations and volunteer groups. Some of our more adventurous clients have included avid outdoor enthusiast group leaders looking to fulfil Health & Safety criteria efficiently and comprehensively via our great First Aid classes.
Our First Aid classes can provide wide-ranging training to group leaders, teachers and volunteers. Although our courses don’t cover the likes of blizzard survival skills on Snowdon, our in-depth knowledge and practical approach can provide a great First Aid training foundation that’s compliant with Health & Safety protocols at weekly meetings etc.
We’re particularly proud of our great children’s First Aid courses; although aimed at teachers, all adults working in a role where they’re responsible for the safety and wellbeing of children can learn from the course.
Knowing what to do in an emergency is about more than just basic skill, which is why we place heavy focus on the emotional barriers and instinctive reactions of dealing with individuals in emergency situations. For example, the recovery position needn’t be applied solely in the workplace. Out on the street, at local events, in the wilderness – the skills you learn on our courses could save a life in the office, but they could also save a life in the world beyond.

First Aid for the Workplace and the Home

When you consider the many different types of accidents and the injuries which result from them, you may think that giving first aid is a complex business. The fact is that if you go through first aid training you will learn the basic principles, which if followed, can help to save a life in most scenarios. For example, if a colleague at work suffers some kind of reaction which stops them breathing, first aid classes will give you the knowledge and the confidence to deal with this situation. A blocked airway could lead to death within four minutes, while the target times for an ambulance is double that. This means that if you have undergone first aid training, you can make the difference between life and death for the person who has suffered the attack.

Don’t think of first aid training as something which can only be used in the event of an accident in the workplace. Statistics for 2006/07 show that just under 4000 people in the UK died following accidents in and around their home. If somebody who had been to first aid classes had been present, perhaps some of these people could have been saved, so if you are having first aid training at work, bear this in mind. You could be learning the skills which could save the life of a loved one or a neighbour. Have a look at the rest of our website and see what we can offer when it comes to first aid training for all situations.

First Aid at Work – Advice

Knowing some form of first aid can mean the difference between life and death after an accident. Most first aid is very basic and can be learned by anyone, yet will inspire a lot of confidence should an accident or emergency occur. Knowing some of the following points can help in the event of an accident. This is just basic advice though, and should not replace effective first aid training.

In the event of an emergency, there are certain things that should be priority. First you should assess the situation, but make sure that you never put yourself in danger. You should clear anything away that could make the area unsafe. Assess any casualties and make sure you attend to any that are unconscious first.

You should first check if any casualties are responsive. Ask them if they are all right with a loud, clear voice. If there’s no response, call 999 and shout for help. Check their airway to see if they are breathing. If they are breathing normally, put them in the recovery position and wait for the authorities. If not, then you should begin to administer mouth to mouth resuscitation. All good first aid classes will teach you how to do this.

First aid training will not only teach you what to do in the event of a major incident, but also how to deal with more minor accidents too.  Having training in first aid can be invaluable in the event of an emergency.
