The life saving potential of first aid courses

Filed under: First Aid Courses — fox @ 8:40 am May 8, 2012
As an employer, you’re no doubt aware of the importance of first aid training. Ensuring that the relevant personnel have undergone proper training is a legal requirement and if you don’t comply with the regulations, you could face serious consequences.
Of course, the significance of courses like this extends far beyond the law. It can reduce people’s suffering and even save people’s lives, so it’s not an issue you can afford to neglect.
Incident highlights need for speed
It’s impossible to predict when a medical emergency will arise and if and when one does, it’s imperative that your employees are able to deal with it effectively.
Highlighting the need for a speedy response, an 18-year-old recently put his training in first aid into practice. Luke Rose jumped into action when he saw that 13-year-old Kieran Savill had knocked himself unconscious after falling off his scooter, the Selby Times reports.
The youngster swallowed his tongue and was therefore in serious danger, but thankfully Mr Rose knew what to do. He was praised by the ambulance crew when they arrived on the scene.
Raising awareness
Mr Rose credited his ability to respond in this way to first aid classes he’d had at work. He also used to be in St John Ambulance. In a bid to raise awareness of the importance of first aid skills, he is encouraging others to attend training. He remarked: “I urge people to learn something about it, just so they know what to do.” Meanwhile, about his actions, he stated: “It wasn’t anything about being heroic, it was about doing your best.”
Making your workplace safer
There are a number of ways in which medical problems can arise in the workplace. Slips, trips and falls are common examples and in some cases, these can be serious. Meanwhile, as well as accidents, health problems can surface. For example, staff members can suffer heart attacks, asthma attacks, choking fits and so on.
It’s therefore vital that your team have undergone the relevant training. Here at Safety First Aid Training we’re experts in the field and should be able to provide you with the perfect solutions.
Why choose us?
There are a number of ways in which we stand out from the crowd. For example, we use trainers that are highly qualified and have extensive hands-on experience. Also, our services are inexpensive. Indeed, you stand to save up to 56 per cent compared with other firms.
Furthermore, we’re exceptionally effective. We have a pass rate of 99 per cent and are the only first aid training provider to have a unique guarantee pass scheme.
Training to suit you
We operate a number of training venues in north, central and west London and, if you have a large number of delegates that require training, we can come to your premises to run the courses. This can help you to minimise employee travel costs and it also limits staff absence periods.

First Aid for sport is a pretty different kettle of fish to something like a CPR in the workplace course. Our sister company, SafetyFirstAid.co.uk, are a premier provider of First Aid across the spectrum, covering everything from how to apply instant ice packs to rugby injuries, right through to someone choking in the office. We know you don’t only need exceptional sports training equipment from us – football cones and so on – but also access to top level training that WORKS.
Why bother putting emphasis on the word “WORKS”? It’s because we know many folks don’t always take in what’s said to them on a First Aid training day. After all, the odds are quite good their skill will never be needed, so why not just tick off the “Qualified First Aider” box and hope no-one burns themself on the laminator! This is an attitude we strive to conquer. Our courses and training guides are designed to be practical, easy to remember and very openly taught. We don’t want folks leaving the classroom with questions. Our trainers are highly experienced (with a few brave First Aid tales to tell!), friendly folks with a real passion for sensible, useful First Aid Training.
If you’re thinking of joining a rugby club, establishing a rock climbing event or finally getting that 5-a-side off the ground, get in touch today to see which of our top specialist First Aid courses suits your area of leisure.

Be Prepared with First Aid for Sports

Whether you run a sports club, a professional team or simply enjoy a game or two, there’s one thing you always need to remember – having a thorough knowledge of first aid for sports is key. It’s vital that you’re prepared because sports can be hazardous by the sheer physical nature of them, and as much as we like to think otherwise, accidents can and do happen. It’s essential to have a thorough grasp of first aid techniques as well as having access to all necessary equipment, thereby ensuring that if accidents do occur you’re fully able to cope with them.
Training will be a necessary aspect of preparation, and if you’re in charge of a team it’s vital you go on a course that will give you the skills you need to cope in an emergency. Having recognised first aiders is essential as quick action can make all the difference to the severity and prognosis of an injury, but it’s just as important to have access to sports first aid equipment when you need it. A basic first aid kit is essential, complete with disposable ice packs and a variety of sports bandages, and these days you can find kits that have been tailored to the specific needs of individual sports.
Having the necessary products to hand is vital, and knowledge of first aid can make all the difference in an emergency. Always make sure you’re prepared and you can be confident that everything is under control, and if you need a bit of help make sure to get in touch to see what we can do.

Sports First Aid: Most Common Rugby Injuries

Filed under: First Aid Courses,First Aid at Work — fox @ 1:33 pm October 8, 2011

One study carried out in the US found that a fifth of all rugby injuries are to the head, with around one in eight affecting the shoulders, and a similar number an ankle. Fractures, concussions and ligament sprains were also among the most common problems.

The frequent contact means that collision injuries are comparatively common.

And figures gathered over one season found that there were around 15.2 injuries for every thousand match exposures. (A player is much more likely to get hurt in a game rather than while training.) The emphasis on fitness training, and an increase in the speed at which games are now played have also led to increases in tendon and muscle injuries.

In matches most injuries take place during tackles, while in training they are most frequent during endurance running and contact activities.

The research has highlighted the need for a well-stocked rugby medical kit, and adequate rugby first aid supplies for every game.

Of course, first aid for sports is always an important issue, but perhaps more so for rugby than some other activities, given the risks and the frequency and nature of injuries.

At Safety First Aid Training, we are leaders in the provision of sports first aid training. Each of our trainers is a specialist in their field, and our amazing value means you can save over 50% compared to other providers. What’s more we have an outstanding pass rate of over 99%. An Introduction to First Aid at Work

Filed under: First Aid Courses,First Aid at Work — fox @ 10:56 am September 29, 2011

Training your employees on first aid isn’t just a good idea; it’s also a legal requirement. Even if the ambulance service get to your offices in double-quick time, it’s always an advantage to have someone already present who is well-versed in how to minimise risk and provide support until the emergency services arrive.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) approves various first aid courses in order for people to qualify as first aiders at work. The main route of qualification is a three day course that qualifies an employee to be a first aider for three years before needing refresher courses, which normally take two days as part of a “Requalification” course.

Anyone can become a first aider – those who are willing, don’t have any predispositions that may hinder them (for example, fainting at the sight of blood!), and those who have the time to go on the course. You should keep track of how many people – for example, on each floor if you have a large building – are qualified, and if they leave or go on extended leave (such as maternity), you should think about training others up so that you always have a healthy number of first aiders ready on each floor.

If you’re not sure how many people you need or want to know what the courses involve, then get it touch with a professional, accredited trainer such as ourselves. With years in in the safety industry, we can advise you on all things first aid for your workplace.

Top Up Your Skills to Save a Life

A recent TV advert in an ongoing anti-drink campaign focussed heavily on the difference some basic First Aid training can make in saving a life. The advert featured a young girl on a night out drinking heavily and eventually passing out on the pavement on her back. The outcome then split into two scenarios. In the first, her friends left her on her back and she choked to death on her own vomit. In the second, a friend with First Aid training moved her into the recovery position; she survived and was tended to by ambulance teams.
Would you know what to do if a colleague or class member collapsed or exhibited signs of severe nausea? Our comprehensive courses aren’t just structured to meet Health & Safety legislation. They’re designed to provide training in First Aid that could really save a life.
We’re real advocates of the hands-on approach to learning. We believe in practical examples and top quality information. No fluff, no jargon, just great training in First Aid to provide on-the-spot care in emergency situations.
Assessing your needs is a big step; how many team members need to be certified First Aiders and to what level? In our expert opinion there’s no such thing as too many First Aiders. The qualifications gained on our courses can be maintained via top-up courses, which means your workplace or volunteer environment will always be supplied with top quality, proficient, sensible First Aid representatives.

Health and Safety Assessments

As well as providing excellent first aid training, here at www.safetyfirstaidtraining.co.uk we can also provide you with an excellent risk assessment service for any firms or organisations that do not have a discrete in house Health and Safety team or OH function. Our highly experienced and trained professional assessors will conduct any risk assessments necessary for your business. After all, your required level of first aid training will be dependent on the various hazards and risks involved in your business operations. For example, in businesses which have employees that spend most of their working days in front of display screen equipment such as computer screens and keyboards, the screens and the workstation furniture must be professionally assessed in order to ensure that they are legally complaint. First Aid courses may also take into consideration the necessary safety measures which should be in place for pregnant staff members but well before the due date, precautions must legally be made to ensure that the worker and their unborn child are not subjected to any conditions, processes or environmental substances which could harm them. A full risk assessment will definitely ensure that your workplace is suitable for pregnant workers.

Of course, any decent first aid courses will contain training on the treatment of burns and it is essential to provide a proper fire safety risk assessment for any work place, no matter the size. Finally, our full workplace risk assessments will cover any everyday hazard, potential danger and environmental risk which could affect your workplace and your workers and is recommended for all firms.

Your Children’s First Aid Training Knowledge Could Save a Young Life

Schools are places of trust. Parents trust that their children will be cared for and educated, students trust that their teachers to have their best interests in mind, and teachers trust that their teaching efforts will one day be appreciated by even the most troublesome of students.

The summer holidays may well be here, but with September being our busiest time of the year for childhood first aid classes, there’s no time like the present to make sure your school is 100% up to date and comprehensively covered.

Our first aid classes are a popular option for inset day training schemes. The course usually consists of six hours first aid training on school premises for around twelve representatives, although we’re always happy to accommodate more (we know organising training days etc. in large schools can sometimes push the limits of even the most proficient of organisational genius’!) We can also arrange to have any absent members visit one of our training centres at a later date.

The six hour course covers CPR (using child mannequins), using Epipens and diabetic needles, treatment of asthma, treatment of choking, bleeding and would dressing, how to treat burns, head injuries (both external and symptoms of internal injuries), emotional support (even the hardiest of rugby players sometimes needs reassuring after a gauge in the thigh from a rugby boot stud!) and the management of unconscious casualties.

Our first aid course certificates last for three years and are fully approved by HSE.

First Aid Training Should Be Comprehensive and Useful

If there’s one thing that really bugs our work first aid course leaders and lecturers, it has to be useless first aid courses that are simply run for the sake of being able to tick off the “Do you have a qualified first aid representative?” box!

As an HSE approved first aid training provider and member of the Safety First Aid Group (SFAG), you can be sure our first aid classes aren’t just fillers to get the odd employee out of work for a day. Our first aid classes are legally, technologically and medically as up to date as possible because we know how important it is that your first aid representative walks away from our training centre feeling confident, knowledgeable and ready.

Being ready; it’s a fairly simple concept to get your head around. We attend school to become “ready” for adult life. Pay little attention at a badly organised school and adult life can be a rather unpleasant shock! Our work first aid courses operate under a very similar banner; we’re highly organised, comprehensively informed and know the difference between “filler” information and what constitutes practical, applicable working knowledge of first aid.

Rather than providing a blanket first aid course, we can offer highly specific courses relating to your workplace needs. Sports first aid, children’s first aid, DSE assessment etc; our policy is to provide your first aid representative with more than just a ticked box. We provide confidence, self-assuredness and above all useful skills.
